What began as a mysterious Friday afternoon staff meeting turned into a moment of celebration for Lincoln Elementary.

After staff received an email notifying them of the 3:20 p.m. meeting, curiosity quickly spread across the campus. Speculation grew as teachers and staff wondered what could be waiting for them in the cafeteria. Was it end-of-the-year information? A list of important reminders? A new issue to address? Only the Lincoln leadership team knew the real reason for the gathering.

When staff arrived, Principal Dr Amber Wilkins and Assistant Principals Melinda Thornton and Morgan Wood read the words they had written to describe the dedication, commitment, and culture demonstrated by the Lincoln faculty and staff.

Then came the surprise.principals of lincoln

Pryor Superintendent Dr Lisa Miller and Assistant Superintendent Dr Tiffany Ballard stepped forward carrying a banner announcing the news: Lincoln Elementary had been selected as a National Gold Star Elementary School.

The recognition, awarded by the National Association of Elementary School Principals, honors schools that exemplify excellence in creating strong learning communities. According to the organization, great schools are made up of much more than what can be seen from the outside; they are places where culture, relationships, and systems come together, shaping strong learning environments for students and staff.

Lincoln Elementary was recognized as a remarkable Learning Community built on three pillars:

  • An established culture

  • empowered people

  • optimal systems

At Lincoln, those pillars come to life through the school's "Eight Houses, One Family" culture, focusing on creating a campus where students and adults alike feel a strong sense of belonging.

Dr Wilkin said she enjoyed hearing the rumors leading up to the big reveal, but she really wanted the staff to understand just how important their work has been in building a thriving school culture.

“Over the past four years, we have intentionally built a school community where every individual belongs, feels valued, and understands they are part of something bigger than themselves.”  She went on to say, “Lincoln students are seen not just for test scores but for who they are.”

Assistant principal Melinda Thornton said Lincoln's success is also rooted in the systems established across campus.

Systems that establish clear expectations for both staff and students, share a common language, and continue to become the norm for how the school operates. Thornton said.   “Accountability and presence became a big rock for our leadership team as we laid the foundation of what's to come.”

Assistant principal Morgan Wood highlighted the way Lincoln's teachers work together to support both academic growth and student well-being. Wood said, "Teachers collaborate with each other during our meetings, participate in peer observation, and have teacher-led PD to ensure that we see what students need to have success academically and emotionally.”

The National Gold Star recognition affirms what Lincoln staff, students, and families experience every day: a school Community committed to growing together, supporting one another, and building success.
